When box cakes start to loose their appeal, scratch that, they’ve already lost their appeal! Making your own cakes is fun, easy to learn, and your cake will be the hit of the party! Many community centers offer classes (such as cake decorating) so check out your local community education center to learn more!

I was pretty skeptical about the idea of making my own cakes, frosting, and especially decorating them! I wouldn’t say I’m the most hand-eye coordinated person out there, in fact, I’m probably the least hand-eye coordinated person I know. That being said, cake decorating has more to do with patience and diligence than hand-eye coordination and finding ways to come up with the exact color you want your frosting to turn out is somewhat of a scientific process.

The tools needed won’t cost much and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you learn new methods of decorating cakes such as roses, borders, writing, figures, and three-dimensional designs (my favorite).

If you’re looking for a new, creative hobby that won’t take you much time and money (unless you want it to) a simple set of pans and decorating pieces is really all you need to get started.
